Advertising
Now that you have decided what you want and created your Job Description, you now need to decide how you are going to find the right people. There are many ways of doing this; some are more successful than others and some cost more than others. These is funding available to pay for this included in your Direct Payment.
There are lots of ways to advertise, here are some ideas:
PA Finder
This is a free internet service provided by Surrey Independent Living Council that can help you find and recruit the right Personal Assistant (PA) for you.
The PA finder website enables you to see what potential PAs are looking for work in your area Find a PA and then contact SILC to find out more information about them and possibly arrange an interview.
You can also register that you are looking for a new PA. By entering you details in the Advertise Here section.
If you don’t have access to a computer and internet connection or need help to enter your details and search for PAs just contact one of SILC’s Independent Living Advisers on 01483 458111 and they will be able to provide you with the support you need.
Word of mouth
Knowing someone who would like to work for you is obviously a good way to start, but another similar way is to ask people you trust if they know anyone who would be interested.
Local Post Office or Shop
This can be a good way of advertising and it has the advantage of reaching most people who live near you. This can be handy in that arrangements with people can often be more flexible, and if they are not relying on transport to reach you they are less likely to let you down through travelling difficulties. It is also very cheap to put a small ad in the shop.
Newspaper
Those recipients who have advertised for their Personal Assistants in local papers have had good results producing many good quality candidates. The drawback is that it is quite expensive to put in even a small ad.
Job Centre
The local job centre will advertise free for you and will often give you help with drawing up an advert and giving you a room to do interviews. If you rely on this method alone you will not include people already in work in your search so it might be useful to include this but use other methods as well.
Whichever option you choose there is lots of help available from SILC (SILC Recruitment Support).
